INJURED BABOONS

Baboon Matters receives hundreds of calls annually to assist with injured baboons. The baboons suffer dreadful pain as a result of the human inflicted wounds, and often spend the rest of their lives with disabilities. In some cases the disabilities such as missing hands and limbs may result in the baboons becoming an adept house raider as it may be easier to get garbage out of an easily accessible dustbin, than it would be to spend the day on the mountain foraging with only one hand. It is important that residents remember the following important facts:

1. Easily accessible food, and feeding the baboons causes the problem of baboon coming into the villages.
2. Hurting the baboons solves nothing.
3. Time spent capturing injured animals, caring for them whilst they recover and then releasing back to their troops is all time and energy that could be spent on other management issues.

Our grateful thanks go as always to the fantastic staff and vets of Fourways Veterinary Clinic, as well as Drs. Gina Du Plessis and Hamish Curry who do so much to heal our injured baboons.
