WHAT THE MONITORS DO

The goal of the monitors is to keep the baboons out of the villages for as much of the day as possible.
The monitors try to achieve this goal by arriving at work whilst the baboons are still asleep and at the sleep site, and then staying with the troop the entire day until the baboons go to the next sleep site that night.

• The monitors work very long hours - from 06hOO - 18hOO in summer and from 07hOO - 17h30 in winter.
• They work in all conditions - pouring rain, freezing cold, blazing heat - they are on duty 365 days of the year.
• The monitors endure a great deal of abuse from disgruntled residents, there are countless occasions where residents take out their anger on the monitors - swearing, racial abuse and general bad behaviour are encountered weekly from residents.
Difficulties facing the Baboon Monitors:

• Dustbin Day!! Residents put the over-full dustbins on the road verges for collections. Over 70% of bins are not baboon proofed and therefore easily accessible to the baboons - the baboons make determined efforts to get into the villages to get to the waste, monitors fight equally hard to keep them out.
• Fruiting trees - often coinciding with the hot, dry time of year, the attraction of juicy fruits brings baboons into the villages, residents shout at monitors when baboons eat the fruit!
• Poor pay. This is a very under-funded project and the monitors are paid minimal wages
• Lack of equipment and uniforms - due to the lack of budgets.
