Support for the Baboon Rehabilitation centres

With so many baboons being hurt or injured, it is inevitable that there will be orphaned baboons with no maternal support, and no chance of reintegration with their natal troop. It is essential that these individuals do have an opportunity for survival and so the Baboon Matters Trust supports rehabilitation centres whose focus is that of rehabilitation and release of baboons.

We have been working closely with Dr Peter and Nola Frazer of The Manger in Barrydale for the past 7 years now. Not only have the Frazer’s taken in some of the local baboons for longer term recovery, but they have also provided care and opportunity for some of the orphaned baboons that come to Baboon Matters.

Baboon Matters Trust has supported the work of The Manger as much as possible:

Funds | We have been able to contribute to the on-going feeding of the animals at The Manger.

Food | We have been able to secure donations of food for the baboons, items such as nuts, dried fruits and vegetables.

We have assisted with the capture of baboons at The Manger and helped to move the baboons from their initial holding facilities to the larger accommodation of 5 hectare camps, as they prepare for their release back to the wild. The Baboon Matters team has travelled to Barrydale on numerous occasions to assist with these intensive operations.

When Dr Frazer passed away earlier this year, we offered support and assistance to Nola Frazer so that she could complete some of the legal requirements for their facilities.

Further to our work with The Manger, Baboon Matters has also liaised closely with the well known centre for baboons ‘Care’ – run by Rita Miljo, as well as co-operating and assisting with work undertaken by CROW in Kwazulu Natal.
