Training
Some time ago a baboon troop in the Klein Karroo started to visit the kitchens and dustbins of the quite town of Barrydale.
Unsure of how to act, some Barrydale residents tried the age old method of shooting at the baboons, but if anything the baboon raids increased.
So when Cape CROW and the Baboon Matters Trust proposed the institution of a baboon monitor project the townsfolk decided to do something proactive and get behind it.
The course was conducted by the Baboon Matters trust free of charge, while Cape CROW, which is based in the area, raised funds from the townsfolk to pay the Barrydale monitor’s wages and uniforms.
The ten new monitors were hesitant at first, but as the training course progressed they became more and more enthusiastic about their new occupation and the opportunity to make a difference.
The young men who undertook the training were taught about the baboons and their relationship with the environment, as well as the practical aspects of baboon monitoring, such as denying the troops entry to human settlements.
The training course was a great success, and the Baboon Matters Trust is delighted to have been involved in the institution of a proactive, non-lethal management solution.
